Sesame Workshop, the company behind Sesame Street has several different localized versions of Sesame across the world. One of those programs, Sharaa Simsim, is Palestine’s versions of Sesame Street and has been airing in that country since 1996. The show was halted because of freezing of USAID funding. The show is not expected to permanently end. Some USAID funds have been released, but it will not yet go to the 2012 funding of Sharaa Simsim.
USAID funds have been used for educational programs in many different nations. Afghanistan, with the help of USAID, recently started airing their version of Sesame Street. Each international Sesame Street program tries to meet the needs of the local children and add elements of culture from the nation.
